Our Goals

Our goals define where we'll focus our efforts and commitments, and set our vision for working with partners to find new solutions.

We are committed to

  • Serving the highest-quality ethically traded coffee we can find.
  • Promoting responsible growing practices that help create a better future for farmers and a more stable climate.
  • Reducing our environmental footprint by working to use less and do more with what we use.
  • Giving back to the communities where we do business.
Ethical Sourcing
100% of our coffee will be responsibly grown, ethically traded.

Although we've already reached 75% of this goal, the last 25% will by far be the hardest. Reaching this goal will require work to bring more existing farmers into our Shared Planet program, and also identifying new farmers for participation. We’ve recently opened up a new Farmer Support Center in Rwanda to help our expansion of SSP coffee in Africa, an important step in the journey we're on.
By 2015, we want to:
  • Purchase 100% of coffee through ethical sourcing practices
  • Invest in a better future for farmers and their communities by nearly doubling farmers loans from $12.5 to $20 million
  • Combat climate change by offering farmers incentives to prevent deforestation, starting with pilot programs in Sumatra, Indonesia and Chiapas, Mexico.
Environmental Stewardship
100% of our cups will be reusable or recyclable. We will significantly reduce our environmental footprint through energy and water conservation, recycling and green construction.

Starbucks ability to recycle varies based on the level of commercial and residential recycling services offered in our store communities. We are committed to making 100% of our cups reusable or recyclable by 2015. In the meantime, there are two ways you can help to reduce the environmental impact of our cups: ask for your beverage in ceramic "for here" or use a commuter mug "to go."
By 2015, and for some goals sooner, we want to:
  • Develop a recyclable cup by 2012
  • Make 25% of our cups used in stores reusable
  • Have recycling available in our stores
  • Derive 50% of the energy used in our company-owned stores from renewable sources by 2010
  • Reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by making our company-owned stores 25% more energy efficient by 2010
  • Accomplish a significant reduction in water usage
  • Certify all of our new stores will be green by 2010
  • Champion tropical rainforest protection as a solution to climate change
Community Involvement
We will contribute over 1 million hours of community service per year.

Last year we contributed 246,000 community service hours and this year we hope to double that and then add 100,000 annually. Our goal is to reach 1 million hours by 2015 and increase the difference we and our customers make in communities around the world.
By 2015, we want to:
  • Engage 50,000 young people to innovate and take action and in turn inspire 100,000 individuals to take action in their communities.
  • Use our network of stores to lead volunteer projects in the communities where we do business.
